It's time to ignite a brushfire of prayer.

I have never sent out an e-mail like this–nor have I ever felt so urgently about something in my entire life. In the unseen world of spiritual realities, of angels and demons, I believe a great contest is building to a climax that we on earth must join. We are being called through prayer to impact the destiny of a nation and world. A quiet, yet awesome wave of prayer to the Living God is growing for the United States elections, and I believe that the Lord of hosts is calling us in these final days to turn those fiery embers in to a mighty forest fire.

My gut sense is reminiscent of Frank Peretti's classic book Piercing the Darkness. In Peretti's novel, after reading 389 pages that describe a growing evil threat, God quietly arrays his angelic forces to prepare a rout of the enemy. The victory will come in answer to persevering prayer, and God has been stirring his people into a growing crescendo of intercession. As the prayer force multiplies, suddenly God sends the word from heaven to begin the brushfire. Myriads of angels swoop through the invisible skies to defeat the enemy's schemes. "For the saints of God and the Lamb!" they shouted as the cornfields, silos, the store buildings, the barns, the forests and the roads…exploded with the white light of Heaven's legions." For the final fifty pages of the book, the hosts of heaven, in answer to prayer, bring an incredible victory to the human dilemma on earth.

Piercing the Darkness is just a fictional story–but it teaches a great truth about the spiritual warfare that surrounds us and how prayer can make a difference.

I believe for the next three days we need to enter into such warfare for the outcome of the 2008 elections. This is a massive spiritual battle and only spiritual weapons will bring the final victory. We should continue to do all the things we are humanly doing to vote, get out the vote, support good candidates etc., but this battle is not going to won on that level alone. This battle is the Lord's–and only his intervention in history can bring a righteous outcome.

Today The Call San Diego has thousands of young people and adults seeking God for mercy and his intervention in our national affairs. Those gathered at Qualcom Stadium are repenting of their sins and asking God to forgive us and heal our land. Dozens of other prayer movements and initiatives have been launched to seek God's favor for our national direction. A movement has been growing for many months and may now involve millions of people.

Today, November 1, 2008, we need to ignite that growing prayer storm into a spiritual hurricane. For the next three days, we need to humble ourselves before God, seek His face, fast and pray, and do everything he tells us to do to influence for good the November 4th elections. We are up against very strong spiritual forces. The enemy has powerful desires to deceive and destroy our nation. It is a titanic conflict for the heart and soul of the the United States.

Only God can win the battle. Only He can send the word from heaven and begin the victorious brushfire of deliverance. We are helpless, sinful and impotent. Our only hope is in Him and His great mercy and love.

I ask you to fast and pray as God leads you through the evening of November 4. I ask you to forward this e-mail to friends in America and around the world who will join in fanning the flames of a mighty brushfire of urgent intercession to the Lord of all the earth. We must have the heart of Hezekiah who prayed these words many years ago during a time of national need: "Lord of heaven's armies, you are the God of Israel. You are the God of he kingdoms of the earth…Now Lord our God save us. Then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you are the only God."

This was God's response to Hezekiah's prayer through the prophet Isaiah: "I will defend and save this city. I will do this for myself and for David my servant." "Then the Lord went out and killed 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp. So Sennacherib king of Assyria went back to Nineveh and stayed there" (Isaiah 37:18,35,36).

This is a true story of spiritual battle. The evil hordes were invading a once godly nation. They cried out to the Lord for deliverance–and he sent his angelic armies and routed the demonic forces.

Ours is a spiritual battle over the future of a nation–involving the hearts and minds of the American people. Pray for forgiveness for our many sins. Pray that deception will be revealed and rejected. Pray that people will see clearly to vote for candidates that will stand for God's will on earth as it is in heaven. Pray that God will send myriads of heavenly warriors to do battle in these United States of America.
